Sign Offs

I can't decide if this bothers me or just intrigues me or both, but has anyone else noticed the new way of signing off a letter/email/note? I seem to see this most often on semi-formal emails from our daughter's school, or our church where the teacher or Pastor ends the letter by saying "I love being one of your Pastors",
"Mike"

or

"I love teaching your children",

"Mrs. Wiley"

I don't remember seeing this before. I think in these cases the signer offer usually means what he/she says but sometimes it seems a bit insincere or something....
And the term "signer offer" is my own creation as far as I know so if you want to use it you must ask for my permission in writing or just pay me...

So the way I understand it, this is instead of writing, "sincerely" or "yours truly", correct? If so, yes, I agree but it's probably not any less sincere than the 19th century habit of closing with "your humble servant." Of course if, "I love teaching your children" simply becomes a habit, then it loses its impact. Yeah, I see what you mean.

    Unca,

Yes, this is instead of a traditional sign-off. In the case of "I love being one of your pastors", it is a habit and I think you're right in that it does lose its effectiveness. At least the person who first did this should get some points for creativity I guess. :)

Maybe “I love being one of your pastors” is truly a one of kind sign off just for you. You won’t know until you check out letters received from the other members of the church.
I mean who knows there might be different sign offs for each congregation member like:

.It’s OK being one of your pastors
.I’m tired being one of your pastors
.I like being one of your pastors sometimes and then sometimes I don’t.
.I would love to be your only pastor
.The other pastor loves being one of your pastors
.I would like to say I love being one of your pastors but I can’t I’m a Pastor

    Blogball,

The "I love being one of your pastors" sign off is at the end of a mass email letter and he signs it this way every time.

Since I first posted this we have received many more special "sign offs" mostly in the school newsletter that came home with our kids a few weeks ago.

I was going to save that newsletter to share but now, of course, I can't find it. We thought it was pretty humorous, however, as the sign offs got more elaborate this time around....

" Loving your children and teaching them the fundamentals,"

    Tina Long, principal

    or

" In the spirit of great knowledge comes wisdom"

I made those up but you get the idea...

Sorry, as usual I was being a little facetious. I do agree with the sign off thing. It’s getting a little out of hand especially when the sign off is longer than the letter it self.

    Like:

    Hi, hope you are well.

From someone who really cares about you and your family,

    blogball,
Be as sarcastic as you'd like. I tend to respond to it anyway...just as unca.
It's my preferred humor as well. ;)

    Merry Christmas everyone!
